Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQ guide for traveling to Peru! Whether it's your first time visiting or you're seeking tips to elevate your experience, this guide covers key questions to help you with everything from currency and safety to essential travel advice. Discover Peru’s stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, and deep cultural heritage with ease, and embark on your journey with the confidence that you're well-prepared to make the most of your adventure.

What is the best time to travel?

The best time to visit Peru depends on the region you're exploring. For the Andes and Machu Picchu, the dry season from May to September is ideal, offering sunny days and cool nights. If you're heading to the Amazon, expect warm weather year-round but aim for the dry season (May to October) for fewer mosquitoes and more wildlife spotting. Coastal areas like Lima are best from December to March when the weather is warm and ideal for beach days.

Do I need a visa to enter Peru?

Citizens of US, Canada and many European countries do not need a visa for tourism or business trips of up to 90 days. For latest information check here: state.gov

Is it safe to travel in Peru?

Peru is a safe and tourist friendly country. The US State Department currently recommends US citizens exercise normal precautions in Peru. To stay up to date sign-up with Step.

What is Peru's currency?

Peru uses the Peruvian sol (PEN). While major cities and tourist destinations accept credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller towns, markets, and restaurants that might not accept cards. ATMs are widely available in urban areas, and US dollars are also commonly accepted in many places, particularly in larger hotels and tour agencies. However, always carry smaller denominations for convenience.

How do I get to Machu Picchu?

To get to Machu Picchu, most travelers first reach Cusco, then take a train or hike via the Inca Trail or other routes like the Salkantay Trek. It's highly recommended to book your entrance tickets to Machu Picchu in advance, especially if you're visiting during the high season (June to August) or planning to hike the Inca Trail. Both have daily limits on visitors, and tickets can sell out quickly.

Is English spoken in Peru?

English is not widely spoken in Peru, especially in rural areas. In tourist spots like Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu, some locals speak English, particularly in hotels and tour agencies. However, basic Spanish is helpful for smoother communication, especially outside major tourist zones.
