Top 5 Things to Do Aboard an Expedition Cruise

Zodiac Cruising & Shore Landings

Every expedition cruise guest looks forward to Zodiac excursions. These small inflatable boats bring travelers from ship to shore, glide through narrow fjords, and provide close-up views of glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife. Shore landings allow you to step onto untouched beaches, explore remote islands, and connect with landscapes that no traditional cruise can access.

Wildlife Watching & Photography

Expedition cruises are renowned for world-class wildlife encounters. Imagine standing among thousands of penguins, spotting polar bears along Arctic ice floes, or watching humpback whales breach at sunset. Photography workshops led by onboard experts help travelers capture once-in-a-lifetime shots, making this activity a favorite for both amateur and professional photographers.

Kayaking & Paddle Adventures

Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding offer a serene, intimate way to explore pristine coastlines. Guided by trained expedition staff, travelers silently paddle between towering icebergs or along tropical volcanic shores. This active adventure is one of the most sought-after optional activities on expedition cruises, perfect for guests who want a more hands-on connection with nature.

Hiking, Snowshoeing & Camping Ashore

Expedition cruises aren’t just about the sea — they’re also about setting foot on extraordinary terrain. Guided hikes lead travelers across tundra, volcanic landscapes, or glacier ridges. In polar regions, snowshoeing and even overnight camping experiences let adventurers immerse themselves in the wilderness under the midnight sun or the southern stars.

Expert Lectures & Specialist Add-Ons

A defining feature of expedition cruising is learning from onboard specialists — scientists, naturalists, historians, and photographers who share deep insights into the regions you explore. Many voyages also offer premium add-ons such as helicopter tours, submarine dives, or snorkeling in biodiversity hotspots like the Galápagos. These experiences enrich every journey with discovery and education.

Highlights of Expedition Cruising

Expedition cruising blends exploration, authenticity, and discovery into a transformative journey where every moment connects you more deeply with the world’s most remote and awe-inspiring places. Instead of crowded airports and packed itineraries, you unpack once and let your ship carry you seamlessly to destinations few travelers ever reach.

Onboard, the atmosphere is designed for curiosity and connection. Guests share stories over regionally inspired cuisine, while expert naturalists, scientists, and historians lead enrichment sessions that prepare you for the landscapes and cultures you’ll encounter. The ship itself becomes a floating base camp — equipped with Zodiacs, kayaks, and observation decks for spontaneous adventures at sea and ashore.

Days unfold in sync with nature. You might kayak alongside glaciers, hike across volcanic terrain, or land on pristine beaches to observe penguins, seals, and rare birdlife up close. Every landing is guided by expedition leaders who ensure both safety and sustainability, offering insights that transform breathtaking sights into deeper understanding.

Evenings bring reflection and camaraderie. Instead of glitzy entertainment, guests gather in the lounge to review the day’s photos, hear stories from the expedition team, or simply watch the northern lights flicker across the sky. These shared moments create a spirit of community unlike any other style of travel.

Your cabin becomes a cozy retreat after days of adventure, offering panoramic windows or private balconies so you never miss a sighting at sea. Attentive staff ensure comfort while the focus remains firmly on discovery — each voyage designed to inspire awe, connection, and respect for the planet’s wildest frontiers.

With expert guidance, flexible itineraries, and authentic encounters, expedition cruising turns travel into a journey of exploration. Here, the world is not just seen — it is experienced, felt, and remembered for a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re new to cruising or looking for insider tips, this guide covers everything you need to know—from language and transportation to etiquette and beyond. Get ready to embark on your cruise with confidence and make your journey smooth, enjoyable, and unforgettable!

What's included in the cost of a cruise?

Most cruise fares cover your stateroom, meals in main dining venues, onboard entertainment, taxes, port fees and access to facilities like pools and gyms. However, specialty dining, shore excursions, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, and spa treatments typically incur additional fees. It's important to review what's included and budget for extras to avoid surprises.

What are prepaid gratuities?

Prepaid gratuities are a convenient way to cover service tips for your cruise staff in advance. Instead of settling gratuities at the end of your trip, you pay a set amount upfront, which is then distributed among your cabin steward, dining room servers, and other behind-the-scenes crew who work hard to make your experience seamless. This option takes the guesswork out of tipping, ensures fair compensation for the crew, and allows you to enjoy your vacation without worrying about extra charges at the end of your cruise.

How do I pay for things onboard?

Cruise lines operate on a cashless system. Upon embarkation, you'll provide a credit or debit card, which is linked to your onboard account. All onboard purchases—from drinks and spa services to excursions—are charged to this account, and you'll settle the balance at the end of your cruise.

What should I pack for a cruise?

Pack comfortable clothing for daytime activities, swimwear for poolside relaxation, and dressier attire for formal nights or specialty restaurants. Don't forget essentials like sunscreen, power adapters, and any necessary medications. Many cruise lines provide packing lists to help you prepare.

Can I bring alcohol or other beverages onboard?

Cruise line policies on bringing beverages onboard can vary. Many allow each adult to bring a limited amount of wine or champagne, while others may have stricter rules. Typically, passengers are permitted to bring up to 12 non-alcoholic beverages (such as soft drinks) and 2 bottles of alcohol per person. Keep in mind that additional corkage fees may apply for alcoholic beverages. To avoid surprises or confiscation, it's best to review your specific cruise line policy in advance.

How do I choose the best cabin for my needs?

When selecting a cabin, think about your budget, the type of view you’d prefer, and how close you want to be to key amenities. Inside cabins are the most budget-friendly but don’t have windows, while ocean view and balcony cabins provide natural light and outdoor space. If you're traveling with family or a group, connecting cabins or suites can offer extra space and convenience. If you’re prone to claustrophobia, it’s especially important to consider a cabin with windows or a balcony for a more comfortable experience.

What travel documents do I need to cruise?

To ensure a smooth cruise experience, having the right travel documents is essential. Most cruises require a valid passport, and depending on your itinerary, you may also need visas for certain countries. You’ll need these documents for embarkation (boarding) and debarkation (disembarking) at each port.

Since cruise ships depart promptly, missing the ship can lead to major inconvenience and extra costs, as you’d have to arrange your own transport to the next port. To avoid this, always return to the ship well before the scheduled departure time and keep your documents handy throughout your journey.

Do cruise ships have kid camps?

Yes! Most cruise ships are designed with families in mind and offer supervised kids’ clubs or “camps at sea” for different age groups. These programs are led by trained staff and feature age-appropriate activities such as arts and crafts, games, themed parties, and even science workshops. While children make new friends and enjoy fun activities in a safe environment, parents can take time to relax knowing their kids are well looked after. Some ships also offer teen lounges and family-friendly entertainment, making cruises an enjoyable experience for all ages.
